The Stormwater Management Plan (SWMP)

Providing Innovative, Cost-effective Engineering Solutions since 2010

The Stormwater Management Plan (SWMP)

With an increased focus on responsible mining, stormwater management and responsible containment of mine and plant wastewater has become crucial. Nurizon has a specialized division dealing with this highly sensitive issue.

The Stormwater Management Plan (SWMP) is a detailed action plan of how the specific Mine will manage the stormwater runoff on the property. Regulation No. GN 77 (more commonly referred to as GN 704) of the National Water Act stipulates that to reduce the impact of mining activities on the environment, the watercourses that fall within a facility’s footprint shall be separated into ‘clean’ and ‘dirty’ water systems, the latter forming part of a closed system.

  • Dirty water is defined as stormwater run-off from an area (or areas) where the water could have encountered a potential source of contamination, e.g. hydrocarbons. Water from such sources should be intercepted and stored in a pollution control dam (PCD) to form part of a closed system, whereby the water is recycled for use in mine operational processes.
  • Clean water is defined as stormwater run-off from areas which fall outside operational areas and are not contaminated. The clean water management system should, wherever possible, be separated from the closed dirty system if it is to be discharged into a natural watercourse.
In terms of Regulation 704 of the National Water Act (Act No. 36 of 1998), any person or company intending to operate a mining facility must comply with the requirements of this regulation to ensure the conservation of South Africa’s water resources.

Nurizon was recently appointed for numerous SWMP and Mine Waste / ROM Stockpile Facilities, to assist our clients with regulatory compliance.

The method for tailings storage will be:

    • Clean- and Dirty Stormwater Channels and Berms (Clean and Dirty Water Delineation).
    • Wet Tailings Concrete Slab. The wet tailings from the wash plant will be allowed to dry on the concrete drying slabs, thereby recovering the maximum volume of water to be reused at the wash plant.
    • Overburden Platform.
    • RoM Pad Platform.
    • Dry Tailings Stockpile.
    • Pollution Control Dams (PCDs).

Nurizon’s client is Red Kite Environmental Solutions, project owner / main Client is Mphahlele Mining (Pty) Ltd.

    • Nurizon’s Scope of Services include:
        • Geotechnical investigation.
        • SWMP for the proposed Infrastructure and Plant Area, with a clear division of the clean and dirty water areas.
        • Design of the TSF.
        • Stockpiles and Overburden Dump Design.

        • Presentation of the above listed designs to the DWS Engineering Department and effecting any updates required.

    Zebediela Nickel Project – SWMP

The Zebediela Nickel Project is located approximately 9 km north of Mokopane (Limpopo province of South Africa). The proposed mining right area will be located on farms Uitloop 3KS (1,925.29 ha), Amatava 41 KS and Bloemhof 4 KS (2620.34 ha), and Piet Potgietersrust Town and Townlands 44 KS (115.26 ha).

The Mining Right Area covers a combined area of approximately 4,661ha.

Mine infrastructure will comprise approximately 150 ha of the larger Mining Right Area. Mining will be focused on the extraction of 72.28 Mt of sulphide-containing material using an open pit, conventional truck and shovel with partial backfill mining method (approximately 100ktpm Run of Mine (RoM)).

The top 40 m to 50 m of the disseminated sulphide material is oxidized (Oxide Zone) and will be stockpiled on an overburden facility. The mine will employ a total of 200 people during its LoM (30 Years).

Nurizon’s client and project owner / main Client is Sefateng Mine.

    • Nurizon’s Scope of Services include:
        • Clean- and Dirty Stormwater Channels and Berms (Clean and Dirty Water Delineation).
        • Pollution Control Dam (PCD) design.
        • Tailings Storage Facility (TSF) design, consisting of the following elements:
          • Tailings drying pad (wet tailings).
          • Dry tailings stockpile (expected Class 4 barrier, to be confirmed as part of the design).
          • Silt Retention Ponds (SRP’s).
          • Presentation of the above listed designs to the DWS Engineering Department and effecting any updates required.
